We all need to play our part with regard to caring for this little blue marble we call Earth. One way to achieve this is through the use of sustainable drainage systems like Grass Blocks to provide an eco-friendly surface.
Grass Blocks for Eco-friendly Sustainable Drainage
Grass blocks are a deceptively simple but incredibly effective tool in sustainable drainage. When appropriately installed the provide a good hard standing that is perfect for driveways, paths, car park overflows areas and more. In fact, here at KPC we supply models capable of being used in turning yards for heavy goods vehicles.
Here’s how it works as installed in the example depicted in the illustration above. The ground surface is prepared level and then covered with a 100 to 200mm sub-base that is rolled until firm. Then a screed layer of 500mm of sand is laid atop the sub-base and onto this is placed the grass blocks, tapped into place. The cavities in the grass blocks are then filled to within 20-40mm or so below the block’s top surface with soil and grass seed and within 2-3 weeks the grass will take hold.
The grass blocks installation will now provide reliable hard standing but rainwater will filter directly through the soil-filled cavities and in the example above will go to ground. Attenuation of the rainwater is another option, allowing rainwater to be harvested or directed away to off-site drainage.
KPC provide a range of grass blocks options in concrete and eco-friendly polymers and they can be infilled with grass or gravel.
