It is so important to address a surface water drainage issues up-front, before it really becomes an issue, rather than constantly ‘fire-fighting’ the issue after it arises. Our friends at ULMA Architectural Solutions recently published an interesting anecdote to illustrate just this.
Tackle Surface Water Drainage Proactively
Like all good stories with a ‘moral’, ULMA’s anecdote does not relate directly to surface water drainage. But it does paint a very relatable tale that goes like this:
My neighbour Tom arrives with his car at the garage door and does the following-
1. He opens the garage door with the remote control,
2. He gets out of the car,
3. He takes 3 bags, 1 box and a large piece of junk from inside the garage to the driveway
4. He gets back into the car,
6. He parks the car in the garage and after parking the car, goes through the same process in reverse
7. He takes the 3 bags, the box and the large piece of junk and puts it back in the garage from which he just removed it and places it behind his parked car.
And so on, every time he has to park the car.
Not once, not twice… but every day, and I cannot fathom why.Surely, the solution is to spend an afternoon tidying up the garage and getting rid of junk therefore allowing him to park his car with ease.
Obviously, the moral of the story here is to deal with a surface water drainage issue proactively so that your solution is in place and ready to avoid the ill-effects of heavy or sustained downpours. ULMA’s Sloped Line Drainage, available from Killeshal Precast can be a significant part of the solution.
Advantages of Sloped Channel Drainage
The built-in 2.5% slope in ULMA’s sloped drainage channel brings some distinct advantages over non-sloped channel drainage systems:
- Higher hydraulic capacity -100 l/s in 20 ml.
- Self-cleaning effect that allows the inside of the channel to remain clean at a low flow rate (from rainwater). It obtains a greater capacity to remove the sediment that can accumulate during heavy rains. This leads to a reduction in the need for maintenance.
- Possibility of installing up to 40 ml. It is possible to install two sections of 20 metres each, with a single water outlet.
